TEN TEARS‘Ten Tears’ was created out of an emotional upset that was the dissolving of a relationship. It is an expression of personal sadness in a tangible and public manifestation, rejecting the feelings of isolation and worthlessness. In the midst of the turmoil, the piece clings to stillness, providing the atmosphere for little moments where emotions and obligations no longer matter, a place for stillness and quiet; but most of all a place for the beauty of sadness.

‘Ten Tears’ is a reaction to an outpouring of emotions. The tangible object is heavy, a glass jug half full of water, but in the context of the panoramic view of Austin; the metaphor that sadness is small is clear. The other incorporated objects have more literal translations. A shot glass bearing images from Chicago, where the relationship developed, is still smaller set against the immense skyline. The glass teardrop beads also hold a literal translation to actual tears shed, echoed with the water in the glass jug. In the spirit of optimism the use of color is incorporated with plastic rhinestones, most fully immersed but a few cling to the surface of the water, a delicate balance of surface tension, again, a metaphor for the emotional tension.
The materials necessary for construction also play a role in the aesthetic of the piece. Black silk keeps the tears from tangling, as the lines are frictionless. But the wire and bulldog clip have an industrial me- chanical feel that keep structure and provide some necessary grounding.
