ROOTS

Roots is a contemplation on nutrition.

Disordered eating has become such an issue in America because there is no longer a focus on cooking your own meals from scratch, pre- packaged meals have become the norm and little value is being taught on constructing a nutritionally balanced palate since all meals can be microwaved or eaten in a restaurant. The connection between food and the body is going ignored when the value between food produced from the earth and our whole health should be examined and invested in using advanced modern tools, we should be trying to protect what works naturally and integrate that in our technologically advanced society.

A skeletal balloon hovers in from of a vending ma- chine full of snack foods; below the foods in the machine are potatoes, onions, ginger root, jicima, foods that grow from beneath the ground. Since the prepackaged foods are fully prepared and available at a signifi- cantly greater cost, the skeleton figure could represent any individual- contemplating nu- trition versus convenience. Using a skeleton adds further examination to the hidden and secret, eating disorders are often focused on being thin and skeletal is prominent, the modern ‘secret’ disorder that is obe- sity translates to the invisible/clear balloon.
